The Writing Center @ MSU provides a wide variety of services to the MSU community that focus on creating better writers. Our services are available for students (undergraduate and graduate), staff, faculty, and community members.
For students
In individual consultations, a consultant will work with you one-on-one to improve your writing on an individual basis. By listening, we can help you to identify your writing strengths and weaknesses and we can give you tools to improve your writing. We are available at several different locations across campus to collaborate with you at any stage in the writing process, from brainstorming to drafting your dissertation.
Write-ins are informal, free writing sessions hosted throughout the year where writers come together in a shared space to make progress on their projects. Write-ins provide a semi-structured time and space for writing, available to a range of writer groups. We collaborate with various campus partners to host write-ins.
Writing groups are regular meetings where a small group of writers work closely with a Writing Center facilitator to read and respond to each others’ work. The primary purpose of the groups is to help individuals talk about writing with one another in mutually beneficial ways.
The navigating graduate school series are interactive writing workshops designed to help students develop an individualized plan for understanding graduate school more generally and graduate writing more specifically. These workshops are designed for students in both the early and latter years of their master’s degree or PhD.
For faculty & staff
The Writing Center @ MSU offers tabling services for events during the summer, fall, and spring semesters depending on availability, where we share services offered by our center so that students feel more comfortable accessing them across MSU’s campus.
The Writing Center @ MSU offers several workshops to support faculty, students, and the community.
The Writing Engagement Liaison Program (WELP) offers specific, responsive, community-based support in an embedded model that works collaboratively with your organization/program’s existing structure.
Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) includes a range of programming designed to support all MSU educators of any level, status, or discipline in developing their writing-related pedagogy.
For community members
As a partnership between the East Lansing Public Library and the Writing Center @ MSU, the Community Writing Center (CWC) offers a space for community members to receive feedback, encouragement, and collaboration on a variety of writing projects and tasks– personal, academic, creative, and professional– from Michigan State writing consultants.
